Feline Grooming Facts

What are the benefits of professional cat grooming?

As well as keeping your furry family member looking their best, grooming is also beneficial to their welfare and quality of life.

  • Regular grooming will help to minimise the amount of fur digested by your cat when grooming themselves, this then reduces the risk of significant hairballs developing in their stomach (and ending up on your floor!).
  • The nature of professional grooming appointments can help to identify potential skin conditions, abnormal lumps or wounds that may have otherwise gone unnoticed beneath your cat’s fur. Any abnormalities or wounds that are found should always be investigated by a vet.
  • On top of maintaining healthy skin and a shiny coat, grooming will keep your cat’s claws neat and healthy. This reduces the risk of ingrown claws, which can cause pain and discomfort.

Cat Grooming Facts

To understand the importance of regular professional grooming to your cat’s health and wellbeing, it is important to understand why they clean themselves so thoroughly and the role their coats play in protecting them.

  • A cat’s fur protects them from environmental factors such as wind, rain, sun and cold.
  • Fur acts like an extra layer of protection from infection or wounds that can be sustained while roaming outside.
  • Cats groom themselves not only to stay clean, but to help in promoting healthy blood circulation. Grooming also helps to stimulate their hair glands, which in turn allows natural oils, minerals and vitamins to spread across their body and maintain a healthy coat.
  • Outdoor cats shed their fur seasonally. During the winter months they grow additional layers to protect against cold weather elements, while during summer they shed these layers to keep cool in the heat.
  • Indoor cats moult continuously due to living in a consistently warm environment.
  • All cats, both indoor and outdoor, experience hairballs from grooming themselves. A cat’s tongue is covered in tiny backward facing barbs, called Papillae, that act like tiny combs which help to remove dirt, debris and loose fur.
