Professional Cat Grooming

Compared to dog grooming, professional cat grooming is a relatively modern practice as it is widely believed that cats take care of all their own grooming needs! Elderly, ill or differently abled cats may need support from a professional groomer to manage claw length, remove dirt and parasites from their coats, and maintain healthy skin. Even cats who have no difficulty cleaning themselves will see benefits from a professional groom:

  • Minimise the risk of hair balls
  • Prevent in-grown claws
  • Support natural temperature regulation
  • Prevent matting

Cat owners who are able to brush their furry friends are regularly surprised at the amount of fur that comes off their cat during a professional groom. Take a look at some of the wonderful clients I have had the pleasure of meeting so far to see what a professional groom could do for your cat.

Before & After

Grooming nervous cats

Some cats are often described as aggressive or spicy because of their behaviour during a groom – and while hissing, bearing their fangs and scratching may seem like aggression, it is actually your cat’s natural defence mechanisms kicking in.

Cats are highly sensitive animals – and unfamiliar environments, handling and discomfort can quickly trigger their natural fight, flight, or freeze response. Discussing your cat’s personality, health, and previous experiences before a groom means we can plan the best approach to protect their wellbeing.

Medication

Stress can make grooming extremely difficult or even unsafe for some cats. In these cases a vet may prescribe gabapentin, a controlled medication that provides light sedation where full sedation is not appropriate. Gabapentin works by reducing anxiety and stress levels, allowing grooming to be carried out more safely and comfortably.

Matting

Severe matting is not just a cosmetic issue for your cat, it can cause significant pain, skin irritation, and restricted movement. In situations where brushing would cause further stress, pain, or discomfort, clipping may be the kindest option.

Splitting Appointments

For elderly, highly nervous, or easily stressed cats – especially those who struggle with travel or leaving the house – splitting the grooming process into two shorter sessions can be the best approach. This allows your cat to rest between appointments and reduces the level of stress they might experience during their groom.

I’ve had a hard time finding a mobile groomer in my area, so discovering Sara was such a relief. She came to trim my cat’s nails and was incredibly gentle and professional. My cat was comfortable with her right away, which doesn’t happen often. The whole experience was smooth and stress-free.
